Search Engine Optimization Strategies: Alt Tags

The Americans with Disabilities Act states that the Alt attribute text on the image is important, so search engines are now accepting them as parameters for search engine placement. If a person is blind, or for some other reason has to use a screen reader, the browsers can read the text that is attached to the image. With this in mind the text should always be a description of the image and it should make sense. To include search engine optimization into this concept, use some of your keywords as the name of the image. Google image search uses the text in the Alt tag to locate the images that match the searched phrase. Some browsers even display the Alt tag in a small pop-up box when you pass your mouse over the image.

The HTML IMAGE ALT tag should:

  • Appear throughout the BODY text
  • Have one word for each 16 x 40 block
  • Have a minimum/maximum 1 to 12 words
  • Be descriptive and support “accessibility”
  • Be unique to each image
  • Should include your keywords
  • Must make sense and be descriptive of the image
  • Comply with laws (Americans with Disabilities Act)

When using the Alt tag never stuff the tag attribute with too many of your keywords. Keep it simple and to-the-point. This may even help you push your search engine ranking up a little. And remember, today many people are using cell phones to browse the web. One way to have pages download faster is to turn off the images. Make sure the Alt tags you use are meaningful. Think about your page without the graphics and try to “describe” the pictures. When it comes to search engine optimization, it’s a good rule-of-thumb to always include an Alt tag attribute on every picture.
