Search Engine Optimization Strategies: Anchor Text

The visible hyper-linked text on a web page is known as anchor text. It is the text that is highlighted, or underlined, that you click on to go to another page on your website, or someone else’s website. If you are thinking about search engine optimization, then your anchor text should contain words that are relevant to the page they are pointing to. Links can help you a great deal in search engine positioning. The next time you browse the web notice the anchor text on the sites you visit. Do the links help identify the actual Web site? Do they contain the keywords the site should be targeting? Using the right type of anchor text can help your company achieve improved search engine positioning.

Search engine optimization is based on the use of several methods to achieve a higher search engine ranking, and the proper use of anchor text is just one more option. Anchor text can definitely provide better quality results in the search engines, but the links need to be relevant to the website or page they link to. Search engines, especially Google, get an idea of what the pages are about from the anchor text.

If you are focusing on search engine optimization, you should always use the keywords that potential clients are using in their search. It is critical for your anchor text to contain your keywords, otherwise they provide very little value in search engine ranking. Try to make sure that the anchor text is not the company name, as this really will not help your search engine ranking. Remember, it is best not to name a link “click here,” add keywords after, or before, the “click here” to be included as the anchor text. Only using “click here” as a link is of no use.

Another very important part of search engine optimization is having links from other websites point to yours. This is an extremely good way to get higher search engine rankings. This is how you increase your link popularity. How many websites have links pointing to yours? If many links on other pages point to yours and they all have your keywords, then the search engines are likely to think that your site is worthy of attention. This can be a very good way to increase your organization’s search engine positioning. Sometimes it can be in your best interest to ask other websites linking to yours to use your keywords in their anchor text. This way the search engines can get a better idea of what your site is about.
