Search Engine Optimization Mistakes: Javascript & CSS

Just about everyone these days use Javascript in their code. Both Javascript and Cascade Styling Sheets (CSS) can definitely make your web pages more exciting, dynamic and interesting for the user, but it can also cause complications where search engine optimization is concerned. The key is to use both of them sparingly.

When a search engine spider visits your site, it’s important that it finds your most important information towards the top of your code for proper search engine placement. Within the first 200 words you want to make sure you have a high keyword density for the words you are targeting. There is often times a lot of code associated with Javascript and CSS. It is usually placed in the header section of your pages and therefore pushes all of your important content further down the page. Javascript can be detrimental to your search engine ranking by diluting your keyword density.

The problem with Javascript and CSS in search engine optimization is the content cannot be indexed by the search engines. Most often times you see Javascript being used for navigation. We recommend to all of our clients that they use HTML text links instead. Search engine spiders can crawl and index text links much easier and therefore, the chances of your most important pages being crawled and indexed are increased exponentially. Fortunately, for both Javascript and CSS, there’s an easy fix.

Place both Javascript and CSS into external files

Instead of diluting your pages with all the code associated with Javascript and CSS, place them in external files and name them “whatever”.js or .css. To call up the Javascript you can use a simple line of code such as: <script src=”whatever.js”></script> or ‘href=style.css’ for CSS. This will reduce the file size substantially, clean up your code, and enable the search engine spiders to easily index your most important content.

By placing your Javascript and CSS into external files, you have now made your website more “search engine friendly”. The next time your site is crawled by the search engine spiders, your important content will be closer to the top of the page, and you will have achieved a better keyword density. The end result…a substantially higher search engine ranking which leads to more traffic and customers.
