If you want to ensure that all of your most important pages are crawled by the search engines, you must carefully consider how your links are structured throughout your website. Proper search engine optimization depends on a link structure that is “search engine friendly”. Be careful not to create unnecessary roadblocks.

It would be extremely unfortunate to put a lot of time and effort into creating content geared towards targeting your most desirable keyphrases, and then because your internal links were not properly connected, the search engines were unable to find your optimized pages. It’s important for your search engine ranking that your internal links connect all of your most important pages to ensure they are being spidered by the search engines and to improve your “theme”.


To get the most of your search engine marketing campaign, follow these few simple rules for your internal/cross links:

  1. It’s best to simplify your links by using text links.
  2. Use appropriate and sufficient anchor text within the body text to provide inner content linking.
  3. Your site map should link all pages one level from the index.
  4. It is best to use horizontal cross linking among your pages with similar content themes.
  5. It is best to use diagonal cross linking to your complimentary content.
  6. Leave no orphaned pages; pages not linked or connected anywhere.

Pages that are seamlessly linked together provide an easy path for the search engine spiders and this will generate a higher search engine ranking for your business. Eliminate the roadblocks and create clear paths throughout your website to make certain that no matter where the search engine spider enters it will easily be able to crawl and index your most optimized content.

In search engine optimization, link structure refers to your external as well as your internal links. It is a fact that the more external links pointing to your site, the better your search engine ranking will be. External links are like positive word-of-mouth, the more you have, the better, as long as the site is relevant to yours. The external links are what validates your site as being the “expert”. The more quality links you have the better your chances are of achieving a high search engine ranking. It’s called obtaining greater “Link Popularity”.
