Search Engine Optimization Strategies: Meta Tags

Meta tags no longer have the importance they used to, but nevertheless should still be utilized. Like many other aspects of search engine optimization, once the spammers figure out how to abuse a particular item, it will no longer carry the weight it used to. Regardless, Meta tags still play an important role in how many of the search engines describe your site on their results pages.

Meta tags are a form of HTML code that provides information to the search engines as to what your site is about. Meta tags contain your keywords and description and are placed inside the head section of your HTML code after your title tag.

Key points to remember about the HTML META Description and Keyword Tags:

Description Tag:

  • Description tag should be twice as long as the title tag, and second in the head tag.
  • Length should be about 18 +/- 6 words.
  • Use complete sentences, repeat keywords no more than twice, and place most important keywords towards the beginning of the description tag, describing your USP (unique selling proposition).
  • A word in the title must be in the description for continuity reasons.
  • Should be unique for every page and make sense to a person if they are to help boost your search engine ranking.

Keyword Tag:

  • Keyword tags should be twice as long as the description tag and third in the head tag.
  • Length should be about 36 +/- 12 words.
  • Separate keyphrases with commas and put the longest keyphrase first. Do not repeat keyphrases.
  • Capitalize first letter of each word.
  • Create unique keywords for each page.
  • Do not repeat any word more than 4 times.
  • Your keyword tag is also an excellent area to place your commonly used misspelled words.

Using Meta tags won’t guarantee you a top search engine ranking but they can help. With the exception of the title tag, information in the head section of the HTML code is not seen on the website. This information is useful in communicating with the search engine spiders. You have to utilize the Meta tags to win favorable rankings in most of the search engines. But at the same time, please keep in mind that the effectiveness of Meta tags is limited. Don’t expect any miracles.
