Types of Search Engines

Not all search engines are alike. The difference lies in the way they store, categorize, acquire and search through data. Some require human intervention while others do not. Search engines are primarily used for research. Before deciding on search engine optimization it might be a good idea to understand how search engines actually work. Basically there are three types:

Search Indexes or Search Engines

These are the types most people use, making search engine placement very important. These systems use a complex set of algorithms to index the information on the page. They rely on automated software called “robots”, or “spiders”, to search out information. These systems analyze pages and then add them to their indexes. They utilize artificial intelligence in determining the relevancy of any given page. The site that is the “least imperfect” gets the best rankings. Search engines are able to detect the same content across several websites, making it very important for your site to provide UNIQUE content.

Search engines create large databases much like the Yellow Pages. A good example of this is Google.com. When thinking about search engine optimization, Google is one of the most important to consider as far as search engine ranking is concerned, as it provides search results to most of the other search engines.

Search Directories

Search directories require human intervention. It’s extremely important that you provide an accurate description of your site to the directory editors. The editors will examine your website based on the information you provide in order to place your website into the proper categories. Each site must meet specific requirements as laid out by the directory. Placement in these directories does not rely on search engine ranking techniques; however, it does require having descriptions that are accurate and concise. Examples of a couple of directories are Yahoo.com and the Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org).

Pay-Per-Click Search Engines

In this system, money talks. If you want to quickly get on the top of Google, Yahoo!, or MSN for your desired keyphrases, you can pay to be there. The top 2 or 3 bids for any given term usually appear at the top or in the right-hand column of the search engine results page. Each time someone clicks on your text ad your account will be debited. You determine your budget and comfort level, then you decide what position you want to be in. Human intervention is also required with this type of search engine positioning. The Pay-Per-Click search engines also have their guidelines that you must follow and their editors will review your listings before posting them. We recommend to all of our clients that they utilize PPC engines to immediately start obtaining qualified traffic and to use as a way to quickly see what keyphrases are working and which ones are not.

The idea of search engine optimization is to obtain high search engine rankings. If you want to be easily found by the search engines then you need to concentrate on doing two things. Design your website so that it can be easily found, as a result of high-quality search engine optimization and second, submit your site to the major search engines and directories. This can be an overwhelming task for most business owners and that is where search engine marketing can be of assistance. Alpine Search Engine Optimization specializes in methods to help drive qualified traffic to your website. Our goal is to maximize your online presence so you can dedicate the time needed to successfully operate the remainder of your business.
