Website Optimization Process: Step 1 - Preparation
Proper website optimization requires a thorough analysis of your website and recommendations to items that need to be corrected in order to make the website more "search-engine friendly." Although some of these items may seem minor to good website positioning, if you consider that Google has over 100 algorithms it utilizes to index any given page, it may be the one thing that sets you apart from your competition.
Prior to beginning your website optimization process, Alpine Search Engine Optimization will look for the following elements on your website:
- Order of your Head section: 1) Title, 2) Description, 3) Keywords
- Total number of words on each page. You should have at least 200 or more.
- Alt tags - should contain keywords.
- Image files - rename to include keywords where appropriate.
- Comment tags - do they exist, are they placed underneath the <body> tag, and do they contain information about your site and copyright information?
- Page names - if they are using underscores, change to dashes, but have no more than 2.
- Link structure - you should have links to your optimized pages from at least your site map and index page.
- Heading <h> tags - is the site utilizing heading tags to emphasize keyphrases you are targeting? <h1> should be for most important heading and <h2, h3, etc.> for subsequent headings.
- Use of <b> tag - should use the <strong> tag to emphasize keywords instead of the bold tag.
- IP Address - we check to make sure your IP is not on any blocklists. If possible, move to a dedicated IP address.
- Site map - add to site if one does not exist.
- Robots.txt - add if necessary to exclude certain pages from search engine spiders.
- Navigation throughout site - test to make sure properly working and pointing to the right pages.
- Javascript and CSS - make sure both are placed into external files
- Privacy Statement - add if any personal information is gathered from potential customers.
- Absolute Positioning or Table Trick - methods used to move your most relevant text to the top of your code.
- Custom 404 pages - include navigation throughout rest of site, otherwise you may lose the visitor.
- Dynamic pages - convert to static, if possible, and shorten dynamic URLs to 2 parameters or less.
- Spam - check to see if there are any methods being used to deceive the search engines.
- Duplicate content - check to see that copy on website isn't a duplicate elsewhere on the Internet.
Some additional website optimization items we will be exploring are:
- Listings in DMOZ and Yahoo! directories
- Web log analysis - we will research which keyphrases are being typed into the major search engines to find your site.
- Keyphrase research
- Link development - see how many inbound and outbound links there are to/from site.
Prior to SEO Process: Step 2, we initially ask our clients what keyphrases they would like to target and we ask them to gather a list from their clients as to how they might search for their particular products or services. We also gather the keywords from their keyword tag if it exists. Next we study the website itself looking for any additional information that may help us determine the best phrases to target. A successful website marketing campaign will target keyphrases that convert visitors to sales leads.
