Search Engine Optimization Strategies: Title Tags

Title tags are extremely important to search engine optimization. They tell a browser what text to display in the browsers title bar. Your title tag must reflect the page’s content. To increase search engine placement, every page that you expect to be indexed by a search engine should have a different, unique title. The title should contain your targeted keyphrases and your company name so you can not only attract new visitors but also establish brand name awareness.

Changing the title tag alone has in some cases earned top 3 positions.


Below are some tips to help achieve a higher search engine ranking when creating title tags:

  • Make sure the page actually has a title and description tag. This gives the search engines a large amount of information about the subject of the page. If you forget to add the title tag then the page will get displayed as ‘untitled.’ Not only does this look unprofessional, it will give you a lower search engine positioning.
  • Take care to put the title tag in the right place. The title tag should be placed first in the head section of the HTML code before the description and keyword tags. To achieve higher search engine positioning, the search engine needs to be able to easily find your title. Never place the title tag half way down the page.
  • Make sure that your title tags are well written. Place your most important keywords first and do not repeat them. For better search engine placement, the titles should be 60-70 characters long, including spaces, or 9 +/- 3 words. Choose an intelligent title for your page. Create words that are as descriptive of your subject as possible. Create a unique title per page.

Remember, since the title appears on the search results page it should encourage people to want to visit your site. To help obtain a better search engine ranking, make it creative and inviting.
